It’s Q4. The time of year when you must “gird up your loins” and defeat your arch-enemies to achieve your annual quota. But what exactly does the saying “gird up your loins” mean and where did it come from? The literal meaning can be traced back to Roman times when soldiers would tie together and tuck in their long undergarments before battle to improve their mobility. They certainly didn’t want to stumble on them during the heat of battle. The saying can also be found in the Old and New Testament of the Bible. It serves as
With this in mind, here are some of my favorite quotes to help you “get the job done” and win the Q4 war from Heavy Hitter Sales Wisdom.
“As Julius Caesar said, “Veni, vidi, vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered). Only the attacker can be victorious; at best, the defender will merely survive.”
“All salespeople are warriors who must fight the relentless march of time and enemies who are trying to defeat them daily. Sales is an intense hand-to-hand battle fought between two people or two groups of people who are each trying to win over the customer. The victor outsmarts, outmaneuvers, and overwhelms his enemies.”
“A smart person knows how something works, a clever person knows how to get something done.”
“Your competitors seek to destroy you. They have educated themselves about your products and sales tactics, and they’re focused on defeating you more than ever. Fortunately, they usually believe in the use of brute force and think the best way to defeat you is by direct frontal attack. In reality, an indirect strategy of winning over the hearts and minds of customers carries the day.”
“The old saying ‘Curiosity kills’ simply does not apply to selling. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Your curiosity can actually save you!”
“Many salespeople don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about their competitors. They think only of their actions and what they will do next. When they do think about the competition, it’s in the general terms of the company, not the individual gladiator they must defeat.”
“One of the most important rules in all of sales is not to panic. Regardless of the situation, always keep your head or you won’t be able to think your way out. Take General George Patton’s advice and ‘Do not take counsel of your fears.’”
“An old sports adage applies equally to sales: ‘Never have your victory party before you have your victory.’”
“The reality is that you are not in sales solely for money. You work in sales not because you have to, but because you have to be free. And this fundamental drive is at the core of the human spirit.”
“For the sales warriors of the business world, the difference between being hailed as a hero or branded a failure hinges on winning. You must win. But in order to win, you must know the steps it takes to develop a winning strategy. Winning is everything in sales as it is in war.”
